Smooth Transition: HMRC's Staged Approach to CDS Migration

In a bid to streamline customs declaration processes, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is introducing a gradual shift to the Customs Declaration Service (CDS) for export declarations for shipments from the UK.

Previously slated for full implementation by November 30, 2023, HMRC has revised its approach to provide a smoother transition for businesses.

Key Concepts:

  1. Staged Migration: HMRC is moving export declarations from the CHIEF system to the CDS in a phased manner.

  2. Extended Deadline: Some businesses may begin using the CDS by November 30, 2023, with HMRC support. The deadline for all export declarations on the CDS is now March 30, 2024.

  3. Preparation Steps: Businesses should obtain a GB EORI number, subscribe to the CDS, and review provided guidance.

HMRC aims to simplify the process while ensuring compliance and efficiency for all users.
